Broughton HS Band Workshop

Wiley’s band director, Lisa Burn, invited Broughton High School’s jazz band to work with the Wiley band students during their before-school band class, followed by an all-school performance.

The long-standing relationships between band directors in Wake County create a unique opportunity for younger musicians to be inspired by older students who were once in their shoes. In turn, the older students gain valuable mentorship and teaching experience as they guide and motivate the younger musicians. Ms. Burn continues to play a pivotal role in facilitating student-to-student learning between the two Wiley bands, as well as fostering connections between high school mentors and elementary students. These opportunities not only provide inspiration but also offer a pathway for young or aspiring musicians.

As the director of the Triangle Youth Jazz Orchestra, a teacher at her private brass studio, and an adjunct trumpet instructor at Duke University, Ms. Burn brings her extensive network and experience to these initiatives. This year’s visit from Broughton, much like last year’s, was a tremendous success and a memorable day for all involved!
