3 artists to look for on Wiley’s campus this year

While most Wiley families were dusting off their backpacks and sharpening their pencils, the PTA Cultural Arts Committee was working diligently to secure artists to visit the students this school year. Thanks to grant funding from the United Arts Council, students and staff can look forward to welcoming three different artists to our campus.

Baba Got BARS

Ready to dance, sing, and write? Baba Got BARS will get K-2 students on their feet to feel the beat of the rhythm and rhymes of rap. They’ll learn that rapping is actually all about math. It’s a word equation!

Baba Bomani will take third, fourth, and fifth graders on a creative writing journey. They’ll learn all about the process and end up with their very own original rap music.

Two assemblies (K-2 and 3-5), February 17

Leni Newell

During this week-long workshop, artist Leni Newell will guide students through creating their very own Batik banners. Batik has roots from Africa and Indonesia. The process involves melted wax and fabric dyes to produce vibrant fiber art. This workshop incorporates the students’ social studies and science curriculum to tie it all together into one educational and fun art program!

Banner workshop, April 24-28

Michael Beadle

Over the years, Wiley has built a strong relationship with writer Michael Beadle. Michael returns to Wiley for a week-long residence with fifth graders. Students will forgo traditional book reports and reimagine beloved stories as lively poetry. Look for Mr. Beadle reading from his new book “What Makes a Giraffe Laugh?” in Wiley’s Media Center during the Fall and Spring Book Fairs.

Residency, May 8-12

Students will not want to miss the immersive experiences these unique artists will bring to the school. Mark your calendar for the upcoming performances and workshops.
